The above video is from a straight ally who is shocked and outraged at his home state, the "gay capital" as he called it, striking down same sex marriage rights. While drifting in and out of his Obama euphoria that The WORLD has been enjoying, he took the time to support LGBT rights. I'm saying this because it seems, sadly, that some in the gay community are scapegoating black Obama supporters for this. *sigh*
Yes, the skunk at my inner Obama party, which has had me smiling like an idiot since election night, has been reading some articles like here, angry over this Prop 8 loss and rightly so. The article is fine, but the comments are sometimes vile and show a level of racism from inside the community that I'd hoped wasn't an issue anymore. It's ironic it took the election of Obama - and the subsequent possible side-effect of the Prop 8 passage, to cause it to bubble to the surface. Cooler heads begin to surface here and here, reminding us to celebrate our newest openly gay member of congress, Jared Polis.
During this election our minds were boggled by information overload, and through it all, the quasi-religious dirtbags behind YES on 8 launched a campaign of lies and misinformation targeting the black community to tickle their alleged notorious homophobia. Though they are barely more homophobic that any other community, the lies worked. The even used children, as if to vote NO was a vote against the children.
We took our eyes off this little ball because of the larger one, electing Obama. By the footage of celebrations around the globe I don't feel bad about that. But the first black president of the United States included gays in his acceptance speech about inclusiveness, one heard around the globe. That's a helluva consolation prize.
Now, there are many black gay celebrities who, had they been vocal supporters of the NO on 8, could have helped defeat this. Queen Latifah alone could have done it if she'd thrown herself into it. It's time these people stepped up if they want our support and our money. But there are many more, all afraid to do what many white celebs have already done and still work tirelessly and publically for -- all of our rights.
Ellen and Portia can't do it all.
It's time they stepped up. Blacks are being blamed for this. Rightly or wrongly so, DL celebs must admit their complicity in this. I truly feel that these people so outraged by the passage of Prop 8 to the detriment of the historic moment in time are missing the forest for the trees. And yes, they are being a little self-centered.
By all means, rise up and fight this obvious second class citizenry tooth and nail. But don't for one second think that we black LGBT aren't fighting with you just as hard, even though we have some cowards in our ranks. Hopefully, in this time of inspiration, they too will step up. Anyway, as we speak, there filling the streets in front of the Mormon Church which sponsored the YES on Prop 8 travesty. If I were on the west coast, I'd be out there with them.
But since I'm on the left coast ...
I'll continue to revel in these Obama vibes ...
from around the globe ....
just for a few more days. Hell, its been a LONG journey. ~~
