The so-called professional reviewers were lukewarm.
They didn't get the importance of this film. Unless you understand the dynamics of the black church and black family, unless you can be honest with yourself and connect on some level with the Dirty Laundry in all families and social circles, then, like those reviewers, you'll remain above it all and too aloof to get the real down home grit and brilliance of this dramedy. It tackles the absentee father issue, the holier-than-thou church folk issue, sibling rivalry, and actually a host of other minute details that become apparent on subsequent viewing. This is a MUST for the collector of Black gay Cinema. Jenifer Lewis (which is why she's an icon in the black gay community) gave the over-the-top performance we've come to love and expect from her. Go girl! This movie made me scream with laughter and well up with tears. Bravo Maurice Jamal!!! ~~
