First off,I'm not knocking Mr Gay World. I love this competition for everything it represents -- i.e, the Univerality of Same Gender Love. However, I did notice the lack of darker skin tones. Turn your volumn up for this extremely fun clip, and notice the darkest berry is the one in the dress. Afterward, check out the "intro of delegates" clip which will be visible in the related video strip. That's our gay world.
Okay, the winner, Mr. Gay Ireland -- seems like a great guy. I'm not taking anything away from him or the fact that he won and I hope he enjoys his year as the title holder. I love the Irish. This may be because I believe they had something to do with blessing the world with the rare, red-headed Latino, which will always drive me to distraction.
But, back to the issue at hand, I went to the Mr. Gay World website, which is already gearing up for the 2010 competition in Oslo, Norway (below) ...
... and I was shocked to find that among the list of 2009 contestants , the only one representing from the entire continent of Africa was Mr. Gay South Africa -->. Yeah. Now, I know the continent has its problems with homophobia and maybe gay men in some of these African nations have more pressing matters than jumping into the spotlight as their country's big gay rep.
I understand that completely. Still, something is amiss with a competition that should represent a global, rainbow, multi-hued face of same gender loving lives to the world at large -- but instead doggedly, and maybe unconsciously, furthers the deadly myth that black gays are either in the closet or don't exist at all.
This isn't about pointing fingers. Maybe its our fault. Maybe Black gays around the world need to do more. Just something to chew on as contestants step up to represent in Norway in 2010. Step up people, step up. ~~
